Info

Gilgit has a very long history and was an important stopping point on the ancient Silk Road. Buddhism was historically influential in the area, and archaeological remains include the famous Kargah Buddha, a rock carving estimated to date from roughly the 4th–7th centuries CE. Ancient Buddhist manuscripts known as the Gilgit manuscripts were also discovered in the region.

The region later came under various local and external rulers, including the Dogra administration and British influence. In 1947, Gilgit became part of the political changes surrounding the partition of British India and the Kashmir conflict. Tourism

Gilgit is often used as a gateway to the mountains and valleys of northern Pakistan. Popular places in and around the city include:

  • Kargah Valley and Kargah Buddha

  • Naltar Valley and Naltar Lakes

  • Danyore Valley

  • Bagrot Valley

  • Heramosh Valley

  • Chinese Cemetery in Danyore

  • Beranu Suspension Bridge

  • Mountain viewpoints around Gilgit

Naltar is particularly famous for its alpine scenery and winter skiing, while Bagrot and surrounding valleys are popular for trekking and nature tourism.

Economy and lifestyle

The local economy is supported by government services, trade, agriculture, tourism and transportation. Agriculture in the surrounding valleys includes crops such as wheat, maize and barley, while fruit cultivation is also important. Tourism has become increasingly significant because Gilgit provides access to major destinations across Gilgit-Baltistan.

Why Gilgit is important

Gilgit’s importance comes from its strategic location, history and proximity to some of the world’s highest mountains. The city connects routes toward Hunza and China, Skardu, Chitral and other parts of northern Pakistan. The Karakoram Highway is particularly important for regional transport and tourism.

In short: Gilgit is a historic mountain city that combines Silk Road heritage, diverse cultures, spectacular scenery and access to some of Pakistan’s best trekking and adventure destinations.
